Alice Bertina Folden Hanel, age 98, of Wolf Point, MT passed away at the Trinity Hospital in Wolf Point on Saturday, May 18, 2013.
Alice was born in McCone County to Bernhart and Hilma Folden on September 15, 1914. She attended Kimmell Country School and graduated from Wolf Point High School.
While caring for her nieces and nephews in Fort Peck, MT and Wheeler, MT, she met Frank Hanel, who was working at the Fort Peck Dam. They were married on April 3, 1936 in Glasgow, MT. After moving from Wheeler, they settled in Glasgow, where their first 4 children were born. In 1944, the young family moved to Wolf Point and 4 more children were born.
Alice, a member of the First Lutheran Church, was active in Ladies Aid, the PTA, the Republican Women’s Club, Brownies and Girl Scouts. She enjoyed gardening and was a wonderful seamstress. She supported her children’s school related events and continued to attend those of her grandchildren. Alice loved to read biographies and books on historical events. She memorized poetry and enjoyed a wide variety of music.
Alice and Frank’s love of travel included a cruise of the Great Lakes, a paddleboat down the Mississippi and an Alaskan cruise. They flew to Hawaii with friends and Alice celebrated her 91 st birthday in Norway (along with Frank, Jr. and Jeanie) while in search of her Norwegian heritage.
Alice was preceded in death by Frank, her husband of 75 years; 3 sisters and 8 brothers.
Survivors include her 8 children, JoAn Houg (Loren) of Wolf Point, Joyce Mann (LeeRoy) of Roundup, MT, Jeanie Bickle (Harry) of Wake Village, TX, Jerriann Hanel of Baker, Janny Parsley (Dave) of Wolf Point, Judy Lanterman (Gary) of Livingston, MT, June Vogt (Mike) of Satellite Beach, Fl, and Frank Hanel, Jr. (Tammie) of Craig, and over 100 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alice touched the hearts and lives of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, May 20 at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 21 at the First Lutheran Church in Wolf Point. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Wolf Point.
