David Kirn Iyážo Nağí “Whistling Spirit”

October 11, 1968 — April 29, 2022

David Kirn, Iyážo Nağí “Whistling Spirit”, age 53, of Poplar, MT, was born on October 11, 1968 to Alma Jean Renz and Charles Kirn in Poplar, MT, he was raised for a short period of time in St. Marie, MT and moved with his mother and siblings back to Poplar, MT where he spent most of his young childhood. Dad was a unique person that strived to do his best at all that he pursued.

As a young man he attended various schools growing up, in Bismarck, ND he attended the 7 th and 8 th grade while his mother went to Nursing School. He also attended the Mormon placement program for one year. He returned to attend his freshman year at Poplar High School and played football, his sophomore year he attended Chemawa Indian School in Salem, OR. He returned to Poplar to finish up his high school years but later finishing his GED. David work on the Oil Rigs in North Dakota and Montana in his late 20s early 30s, he has held various occupations with labor throughout his life until his passing, He also attended the local community college and acquired his Auto Mechanics Degree with Fort Peck Community College. He was currently pursuing a degree in Diesel Mechanics with FPCC.

The early 90s David met Mary Youpee, the mother of his two eldest children, Jessica E Kirn and Jerome Kirn and in the late 90s he met Shannon Merculieff whom he later married and brought 5 more children into this world, Brandon Merculieff, JulieAnn Kirn-Firemoon, Jade Kirn, Josie Kirn, and Jacqueline Kirn this union lasted 20 years as they parted ways, they remained friends until his passing. Brenden Drum, Jayla Kirn, Malik Red Eagle, Aaron Kirn, Urijah Red Eagle and Bailee Kirn are the grandchildren of David.  Jennifer Red Thunder and her family, Daniel Red Thunder and his family and Jenna Red Thunder and her family as he considered them his own and loved them as well. He enjoyed when any of his kids and grandchildren came to visit him.

David is survived by all his children: Jessica E. Kirn, Jerome (Chelsi) Kirn, Brandon Merculieff, JulieAnn (Sirr) Kirn-Firemoon, Jade Kirn, Josie Kirn, Jaqueline Kirn and the ones he loved as his own Jennifer Red Thunder, Daniel Red Thunder, and Jenna Red Thunder. His grandchildren: Brenden Drum, Jayla Kirn, Malik Red Eagle, Aaron Kirn, Urijah Red Eagle and Bailee Kirn. Sisters: Leslie Jackson, Roberta Jackson, Ramona Jackson, Joann Todd and Danielle Crowe. Nieces: Angela Pollotto, Courtney Rowe, Olivia Headdress, Devon Jackson, Cerra Clark, LaDea Jackson, Allison Franklin, Nova Jackson. Nephews: James Brown, Dustin Jackson, Jeremy Jackson, Tyson Manzanares, Miles Jones, Centennial Colon, Brent Jones, Ian Jackson, Dan-Michael Franklin, Alex Burshia as well as many other relatives thereafter.

David is proceeded in death by his brother Don Jackson, his Mother Alma Jean Renz, Grandmother Lucille Gibbs, nephew Duran Jackson, his cousin Roger Brien, his Uncle Harold Renz, and Aunt Roberta Garfield. Apologies for anyone we didn’t list David came from an extremely big family.

A wake will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Poplar, Montana. The funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Poplar, Montana. Interment will follow at Boxelder cemetery.
