Dorothy J. Winhofer

September 19, 1912 — September 17, 2008

Dorothy J. (Voorhees) Winhofer, age 95, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the McCone County Health Care Center.

Dorothy was born September 19, 1912 to William Voorhess and Alma Pilgrim on the family farm south of Poplar, MT. She attended Poplar High School and attended college in Dillon, MT.

On September 17, 1934 she married Frank S. Winhofer in Wolf Point. They made their home and spent their life on the farm in Grandview Community and raised two children, Dolores and George. Dorothy was a schoolteacher. Over the years she taught many students at many rural schools. Even though she retired from teaching school, she never stopped teaching. Her children, grandchildren and neighbor kids were always learning things from her. She was famous for her chickens which she shared with everyone. Frank died on May 24, 1993 and Dorothy remained on the farm until she moved to Circle in May, 2003.

Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Poplar. She adored babies and always wanted to “help mother’s out” by holding their little ones for them. Dorothy loved caring for her chickens on the farm. She continued to raise them until she turned 90.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Norman, Robert and William, Jr. and one grandson.

She is survived by her daughter, Dolores (Sherman) Hines of Williston, ND; son, George (Margaret) of Richey, MT; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel, Poplar. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, Poplar. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery, Richland County.
