Our beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather, Everett William Browning, age 67, of Poplar, Montana, passed onto the spirit world on Friday, February 1, 2008 at the Northeastern Health Service in Poplar, Montana.

Everett was born to James Eder and Cassie Browning on June 11, 1940 in Poplar.

He grew up on the Standing Rock Reservation, attending schools in Cannon Ball and Ft. Yates, North Dakota.

In June, 1968, he met and married Joanne Lee Youpee in Poplar.

During the late 1960’s and the early 1970’s he worked as a security guard for the Fort Peck Tribal gun factory, and later became a tribal policeman and worked his way up to Lieutenant of the Fort Peck Tribal Police Force in his younger days. After leaving the Police Force he was employed as a correctional officer at the Juvenile Detention Center and the Tribal Jail. In the 80’s he was employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the B.I.A. Roads Department and then worked with various road construction companies across the state, which required him to travel away from his family Everett was also an avid basketball fan of the Poplar Indians and other reservation school teams. He was known to always be there in support of various players who needed help financially. Everett loved traveling and attending pow-wows with his family and recording their beautiful songs. He was presently on the Wahcinca Dakota Oyate Committee, and previously on many other celebration committees throughout his life. He was always ready and willing to help anyone in any way he could.
Everett and his wife Joanne raised many nieces, grandchildren and foster children throughout his life. He enjoyed spending his time playing bingo and visiting with his family and friends. He was fluent in his native language and upheld his traditional ways.

Everett is survived by his wife Joanne, sons Everett (Joker) Browning, Anthony John (Tony) Browning of Great Falls, and Delwayne (Fats) Browning and wife Ann; one daughter, Sherry Browning of Hot Springs, Montana and Gina Youpee whom he raised as his own, along with Josephine Youngman Wilkie of Havre, and Gwendolyn Claymore of N.C. Brothers left behind are Jim and Robert Eder of Phoenix, AZ and two adopted brothers Larry Hamilton, Louie Youpee and Solemon White Eagle; one sister, Mary Cleland of Phoenix, AZ and two adopted sisters Joan White Eagle and Melissa Cantrell. He also is survived by his grandchildren of the family home whom he raised as his own, Joanne (Angel) and Sheridan Stranger Horse, and his pride and joy, a granddaughter, Liessa Marie Browning who made his day and gave him strength to carry on daily, along with his grandson Christopher Browning.

Preceding him in death are his parents, and a son, Curtis Browning and numerous relatives.

A Wake will be held Thursday, February 7 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Poplar Cultural Center. Funeral Services for Everett will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2008 at the Poplar Cultural Center with Rev. Dr. James Isaac and Rev. Stephen Gray Hawk officiating. Interment will be at the Poplar City Cemetery.
