Lorraine Jeanette Wakan Stormy was born December 24, 1932 in Poplar, MT to George T. Wakan and Bessie Wakpa Wakan. Lorraine married Clarence “Sarge” Stormy in 1956. They were married for 21 years and later divorced but remained friends up until Clarence’s passing in 1998. To this union seven children were born. Lorraine worked at the Poplar Hospital for 20 years. She was the head of housekeeping. Lorraine was well known for making and sewing star quilts for just about everybody across the reservation. Lorraine raised five grandchildren as her own and had many great grandchildren. Mom always had a place for you to sleep if you had nowhere to go.
Lorraine is survived by one son Richard Stormy and adopted sons Jake White Bull, Narvin Chaser, and Sheperd “Lips” Youpee all of Poplar. She is survived by one daughter Jackie (John) Spotted Bird of Brockton and adopted daughter Pauline Boxer of Poplar. She is survived by grandchildren she raised including Mark and Michael McClammy, and Red Fawn Crazy Bull all of Poplar, Russell and Alex Stormy of Spokane, WA and Luke Stormy of Somers, Montana.
She is survived by cousins Nellie Silk of Wolf Point, Mary Ann Grey Bull of Billings, Angela and Cecilia Brown of Manitoba, Canada, and Melvin Demas of Manitoba, Canada. She is survived by nieces (from Poplar) Georgia Red Eagle, Louise Ell, Gloria Chopper, Pearl Hopkins, and Barbara Birdsbill of Wolf Point. Lorraine is survived by Delilah and Tom Alfrey, Sr. and family of Lapwai, Id, Linda and Eugene Parslow and family of Spokane, WA and Priscilla Wakan of Missoula. She is survived by Eloise and Delores Youngman, Donna, Izzy and Wilma Snell Youngman of Poplar. She is survived by nephews Lavern Wakan of Spokane, WA and Frank and Esther Hapa of Fort Kipp, Montana.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents George and Bessie Wakan, her six brothers Albert “Bacon” Wakan, Jesse Wakan, Felix and Julius, Wallace, and Leonard Wakan. She was preceded in death by her five sons Richard, John, Jimmy, Hotrod, and Russell Stormy. She was preceded by two special granddaughters Lorraine and Jessica Stormy.
A wake will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Poplar Cultural Center. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Poplar Cultural Center.
