Lowell “Stinker” Nation, age 57, of Wolf Point, MT passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at his residence in Wolf Point as a result of a heart attack.

Lowell was born on July 4, 1954 in Poplar, MT, the son of Lowell F. Nation and Pearl Yellow Hawk. He attended school at Poplar Schools and graduated from Dawson Community College in 1982. Lowell was employed as a Laborer, Security Guard, Fish & Game Warden, Auto-Mechanic & Senior Companion.

He married Francis Nation in 1974, they later divorced. In 1980, he married Cara Oakes, to this union, Samantha, Josh, and Lilly were born; they were divorced in 1997. In 1999, Lowell married Marilyn Martell and they later divorced but remained close friends up till the time of his passing.

Lowell was an avid fisherman and hunter and treasured the times he spent outdoors with all his hunting buddies. Lowell was also a doting grandfather and storyteller. He could always be counted on for telling very tall tales and usually to those naïve enough to believe him. Lowell was proud of his Sioux heritage. He participated in Sun Dances and was a pipe carrier.

Lowell is survived by his mother, Pearl Yellow Hawk of Poplar; sons, Joshua Nation of Dickinson, ND, Cetanzi Nation and Michael Williams, both of Wolf Point; daughters, Samantha (Ken) Nation, Lily Nation, and Alexandria Nation all of Dickinson, Melanie Nation of Wolf Point, Heaven Nation of Oak Harbor, WA, Linda Williams, Darla Williams and Carla Williams all of Wolf Point; step daughters, Robin Iceman of Minneapolis, MN, Ramona (Donovan) Iceman, Francine (Emery) Iceman, Angel Scott and Lorena (Brian) Scott all of Poplar; step-sons, Melvin Scott, Donald Iceman, and Lloyd Iceman of Poplar; brothers, Frank Nation of Poplar, David Nation of Seattle, WA and Perry Nation of Billings, MT; sisters, Fawn Yellow Hawk of Tacoma, WA and Denise (Joe) Castillo of Vancouver, WA, April Nation and Margaret Nation both of Seattle, and Lee (Joe) Abbott of Culbertson, MT; adopted brothers, Joe Gray of Wolf Point and Brad Gray Hawk of Poplar; adopted sisters, Maureen Gray Hawk and Marie Draszt both of Poplar; aunts, Vivian Lindahl, Roberta Garfield both of Poplar, and Loretta “Faye” McGrath of Grass Valley, CA; 22 grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, and other extended family.

He is preceded in death by daughter, Amanda Nation; father, Lowell Nation; aunt, Wanda Iron Leggins; uncles, Scobey Yellow Hawk and Elmer Yellow Hawk Sr.; and grandfathers, John Yellow Hawk Sr. and Howard Iron Leggins; grandmother, Adele Iron Leggins; cousins, Elmer Yellow Hawk, Jr., Gene McGrath, Sonny Iron Leggins and Jay Kirk; nephew, James White Shield; and a niece.

A wake will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 22 at the Poplar Cultural Center. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 23 also at the Poplar Cultural Center. Interment will follow at the St. Ann’s Cemetery in Poplar.

Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements.
