Marjorie Irene Clayton

September 11, 1919 — August 13, 2010

Marjorie Irene Clayton, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at her beloved Whitefish home on August 13, 2010. Marjorie was born on September 11, 1919 in Stanford, Montana to Albert & June Spady.

Marjorie attended schools in Helena, but moved to Wolf Point for her high school years. In Wolf Point, the tall, athletic Marjorie met her life’s love — Lyman M. Clayton, Jr. Lyman and Marjorie married on December 21, 1940, and made their home in Wolf Point following Lyman’s return from World War II. Lyman, with Marjorie’s significant assistance, continued to operate the family’s Clayton Memorial Chapel for the ensuing 50 years. Marjorie was a pioneer of sorts, as a charter member funeral director in the State of Montana. She was Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter in Wolf Point and active in the Billings Eastern Star. Marjorie was a member of the Daughters of the Nile in Helena. She went on many Global Grannies trips and enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends.

Marjorie’s most heartfelt passions flowed from the raising of her children, and the pride and joy of seeing her 6 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren play, learn, and grow. She was always known by the children as the “hip” grandmother; always energetic and vivacious no matter the number of candles on her birthday cake.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband Lyman in 1995, her son Skip in 2007, a sister Dorothy, and a great granddaughter, Sophie Paulsen.

Her survivors include: her daughter Beverley (Chuck) Martin of Whitefish, MT; a daughter-in-law Penny Clayton of Galata, MT; and her six grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Craig (Amy) Martin and Cade and Brett of Pittsburg, PA; Keith (Lisa) Martin and Jack and Ruthie of Chicago, IL; Gail (Darin) Johnson, and Elizabeth, Nick and Kate of Billings, MT; Michelle (James) Johnson and Kaylee and Aaron of Wolf Point, MT; June (Jake) Zimmerman and Molly and Zackary of Ada, Ohio; and Nicole (Jeff) Paulsen and Maggie of Billings, MT.

Visitations will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point, MT on Sunday, August 15th. The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel with Reverend Bonnie Novak officiating. Memorials may be made to the Kalispell Regional Medical Center Hospice at 175 Commons Loop, Suite 100. Kalispell, MT 59901.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.stevensonandsons.com. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements.
