Mathew James Big Talk Sr.

April 19, 1947 — September 10, 2009

Mathew James Big Talk, Sr., Mato-Oh-Heteka “Brave Bear,” age 62, of Brockton, MT passed away September 7, 2009 in Poplar, MT due to natural causes.

Matthew was born April 13, 1947 in Sisseton, SD to Harry and Lucy DeMarrias Big Talk. He grew up and attended schools in Brockton.

On December 31, 1979 Mathew married Vera Bird Big Talk. To this union they were blessed with three children, Lisa, Lori and Matt. Mathew and Vera were married 29 years before Vera passed away in July of 2008.

Matt worked for A&S Tribal Industries and was also a janitor at the Brockton School. He worked on the oil rigs and seismograph.

Matt loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and making Native American ceremonial and dancing items and regalia. Matt was one of the original Bad Land Singers.

Matt is preceded in death by his wife, Vera Big Talk; parents, Harry and Lucy Big Talk; brother, Steven Big Talk; sisters, Ruth(Martin) Big Talk and Virginia Big Talk-Jones; grandsons, Jeremy Lone Bear, Payton Weinberger and Robert MacDonald; brother-in-law, Edmund Bird; nephews, Louis Conklin and Darryl Jones; and his special cousins and hunting partners, Abe DeMarrias and Ralph Jones.

Matt is survived by two daughters, Lisa Big Talk of Poplar and Lori Big Talk of Brockton; son, Matt “Bully” Big Talk, Jr.; grandsons, William (Jenny) Big Talk-Jaila of Wolf Point, Robert (Marian) Azure and Michael Thomas of Brockton, and Misty Thomas of Riverside, MT; three adopted brothers, Leonard Crow Dog of Rosebud, SD, Sonny Hare of Rapid City, SD and Calvin First of Poplar; and one adopted sister, Myrna First of Poplar.

A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Brockton Cultural Center. Funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2009 also at the Brockton Cultural Center. Interment will follow at Riverside Catholic Cemetery in Brockton.
