Maynard Lionel Hawk (Charging Whirlwind Horse), “Skeedo” was born to Edward Michael Hawk and Almena Necklace on May 11, 1951 in Poplar, Montana. He grew up in Fort Kipp, just west of town on the old highway. Alot of his time was spent with his relatives Rusty, Dusty, Lyle, Louis “Jack” Youpee, and Sissy Anderson. He later moved to Poplar and stayed with his cousins, the Dennys’. He had two children with Flora Hapa: Monella Rose Hawk and Herman James Hawk, who passed away at a young age.
Maynard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1970 and was later honorably discharged. He later married June Greybull in the 1980’s. Maynard had various jobs, mainly for the BIA Roads department, and did some sub-contracting for Fort Peck Housing. He also had lots of interests and hobbies throughout his lifetime, some of which included working horses, hunting, fishing, mechanic work, coaching baseball championship teams. He was also a Traditional Men’s Style Dancer, played the bass and rhythm guitar, and enjoyed playing bingo. Maynard and his wife June were members of the Poplar Assembly of God Church, and were baptized together as a family (Maynard, June & Rocky), by Pastor Bill Ulin in the Poplar River. Dad had several stories about Pastor Ulin of when they spent alot of time together hunting, fishing, and doing maintenance at the old Poplar Assembly of God Church.
Maynard is preceded in death by his father, Edward, and mother, Almena; along with his stepfather, Lawrence Reddog, son, Herman Hawk, wife, June Greybull, step son Rocky Cooeyate, and grandson Trey Marion. siblings, Edward, James, Carol, Bonnie, Pamela, Lauren, Estelle, Kara, and Sissy Anderson. He is survived by a daughter, Monella Hawk, son, Steven Smith; grandaughters, Nichelle (Donovan Menz) Hawk, Mikela (Trey) Miller, Alissa Roberts, Kandi Cooyate, Rachel Cooyate, Kacee Cooyate, Cecilia Cooyate, Raina Cooyate, Capricia Cooyate, Tara Cooyate, Candacea Cooyate, Vandina Cooyate, Vaden Cooyate, and grandsons, Zachary Smith and Gordon Cooyate. special brother-in-law, Johnny Youpee, and brother, Cody Eagleman.
A wake will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2022 at the Poplar Cultural Center. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at the Poplar Cultural Center. Interment will follow at Fort Kipp Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements.
