On the evening of December 3, 2013, Peter “Bull” Leonard Stump, Jr., of Oswego, MT left this world to be with the Lord and be reunited with loved ones in Heaven. Pete passed away peacefully of natural causes North of Poplar, MT while spending time with a special friend, Darlyn Grainger. He was 67 years old.
Pete was born in Havre, MT on December 31, 1945. He was the second son of eight children of Eleanor Marie Hubbard and Peter Walter Stump.
Pete joined the Army on December 15, 1965 and served in Germany, Europe, and Greece. He spent a total of 6 years in the service, being honorably discharged on February 2, 1968. Pete met and married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Jackson. They raised two sons together, Mike and Steve. They also raised 3 grandkids, Donell, Pete, and Kristin. Pete finished his education by receiving his G.E.D. and taking several college courses.
Pete had many jobs over the years; he was a custodian, police officer, game warden, and a soil conservation technician. He received an award from the City of Billings, MT for coming to the aid of a Billings City police officer that was being assaulted by a criminal. That was the kind of man he was; he had no fear, no quit, and didn’t back down from any challenge.
Pete was a cowboy! He loved to rope and ride. He was a member of the PRCA for many years. He qualified for the Montana circuit finals 3 times. Pete was also a member of several local roping clubs. He was always game to load up the horses and head down the road, no matter how far he had to go roping.
Pete has won 10 saddles and trophy buckles and other prizes, so many that we lost count. Even he couldn’t remember the exact number. “Chuck n Duck…there’s no money at the other end of the arena!” was a phrase he said often.
Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Patty; brother, Harold; parents, Peter and Eleanor; granddaughter, Stephanie; and great grandchild, Pete, III.
Pete is survived by his sons, Mike (Pearl) of Oswego, MT and Steve (Connie) of Williston; brothers, Robert (Louise) and Ronnie (Gina) both of Rocky Boy, MT, Gordon (Bobbie) of Salt Lake City, UT, and Keith “Keno” of Great Falls, MT; sisters, Darleen (Pudd) and Edwina of Poplar; best friends, Ken (Karen) Blatt, Billy (Fredarica) Crow Bait Lamere all of Rocky Boy, MT; and many nephews, nieces, and grandchildren too numerous to mention but never forgotten.
A wake will be held 7 p.m. Friday, December 6 at the Oswego Community Hall. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 7 at the Oswego Community Hall. Interment will follow at the Oswego Presbyterian Cemetery.
