Robert Charles Guldborg
1932-2008
Robert Charles Guldborg, 76, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2008 surrounded by his loving wife and children.
Bob was born March 25, 1932 in Glendive, Montana to Kneut and Alice (Harrington) Guldborg. He attended Brockway Grade School and graduated from Circle High School in 1951. He played football, basketball, and baseball throughout high school.
Upon graduation, Bob enlisted in the Navy in July of 1951, serving for a total of four years during the Korean War. He served on the USS Snowden and USS McCord. In 1953 after serving in Korea for seven months, he went around the world, starting at Norfolk, Virginia, through the Panama Canal to California and on to Hawaii. From there, the destroyers he served on traveled to Midway and then spent seven months on the waters between Korea and Japan. The trip continued on throughout the Philippines (crossing the equator near Singapore), the Red Sea and Suez Canal, with final stops at the Rock of Gibraltar and France. He spoke often of this trip, especially an audience his unit had with Pope Pius XII in Italy and his time spent playing on the Navy basketball team. He was discharged in 1955 and went to work for Brockway Hardware in Brockway for three years.
In 1958 he started farming and ranching on the Guldborg homestead west of Brockway on the Green Trail along with his brothers Kenny and Tom, forming Guldborg Bros, Inc. On July 6, 1958, at the Lutheran Church in Circle, he married Yvonne (Vonnie) Chambers, daughter of the late Fred and Caroline Chambers of Circle, Montana. They have three children.
Bob was a devoted supporter of Circle athletics and enjoyed attending his children’s football, basketball, and baseball games. The family loved going to Fort Peck Lake for camping, fishing, and swimming. After the children were older, Bob and Vonnie enjoyed golfing and winter snowmobile rides with area friends. He was a stock car driver, played softball on the Rolandson Implement team, served as baseball president, was on the hospital board and was active in the Circle Booster Club. Bob was a proud member of the VFW Post 4813, the Honor Guard, Circle Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch and the Al Bedoo Shrine. We have fond memories of him serving as a Hi-Line Shrine clown.
Bob suffered a severe stroke in November of 1991 and was admitted to the McCone County Health Center on January 6, 1993. Although he could not be at home with his family, he never lost interest in farm activities and the accomplishments of his children. In his later years, his six grandchildren were the focal point of his life and he dearly loved each of them.
Bob is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Vonnie; his children, Kari (Darryl) Wagner of Billings, Kurt (Tish) of Brockway, Kevin (Emily) of Brockway; his brother, Tom (Linda) Guldborg of Vida; and his six grandchildren, Jena and Jordyn Wagner, Maya and Laney Guldborg, and twins Laura and Conner Guldborg; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Knuet and Alice Guldborg and a brother, Kenny.
If desired, memorials can be made to the McCone County Health Center of the charity of your choice.
