Robert “Sully” E. Sullivan, age 80, of Wolf Point, Montana, died surrounded by loved ones on March 30, 2008 at NEMHS due to congestive heart failure.
Sully was born on April 19, 1927 in Glendive Montana to James and Lillian (Covert) Sullivan.
At a young age Sully and two younger sisters went to live with the Shumway family north of Wolf Point. His growing up years were spent at the Shumway farm and attending school. After graduation in 1945 he entered the Army at Ft. Douglas UT. His occupational specialty was Ambulance Driver, earning an Army of Occupational Medal. In 1949, Sully took flying instructions although we never saw any evidence of such. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Sully worked for various farmers, Moe Motors, and for many years for Marvin Baker at Triple Supply. He was a former member of American Legion Post #22 and an Honorary Lifemember of Elks Lodge #1764.
Sully enjoyed his retirement “coffeeing” daily and getting caught up with the latest gossip. In 2003 he was the Grand Marshal for the Wolf Point Wild Horse Stampede.
Sully is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and three sisters, Lillian “Joyce” Watkins, Arletta Marconett and Patsy Holum, several foster siblings and many close friends.
Survivors include many friends among them the Hoversland families, cousin David (Lucille) Covert of Terry MT., foster brothers, Leroy (Loretta) Shumway of SanDiego, CA, Herman (Marlene) Shumway of Wolf Point and Jack (Barbara) Shumway of Wolf Point; nephews, Jim (Glenda) Marconett of Garden City, MO., Don Marconett of Durango, CO., Dana (Wendy) Marconett of Belton, MO., Bob (Kathy) Holum of Gillette, WY., and nieces, Judy Holum of Wolf Point, MT. and June (Nick) Hagadone of Miles City MT. Sully is also survived by several great nephews and nieces including his name sake Robert Sullivan Marconett.
Viewing will be after 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point, MT., followed by the services at 1:00 p.m. , which will include time for storytelling. Sully will be honored with Military Rights. Cremation will follow with inurnment in the Veterans Circle at Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
