Robert Louis “Smitty” Smith, age 75, of Wolf Point, MT passed away Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Valley View Home in Glasgow, MT.
Robert was born on October 2, 1938 in Poplar, MT to Charles and Emma Smith. He was drafted into the military in June of 1962. He was a Specialist in the U.S. Army Military Policeman with top secret clearance station at Dugway Proving Ground outside of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Robert was highly educated and knowledgeable about a variety of topics. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education K-12 from Northern Montana College in Havre, MT. On January 18, 1973, he married Victoria Louise Smith. They were married for 31 years until her passing on July 27, 2004. He was an avid pool player, horseshoe thrower, and basketball star. Robert spent his younger days throwing bales for Lionel Flynn, and was employed with the Corp of Engineers, Tribal Police Dept., A&S Industries, Commodity Food Program, Fort Peck Tribes-Senior Citizens Meal Delivery and the Wolf Point Head Start.
Robert enjoyed his family and most of all loved the Lord. Robert was a member of the 1 st Baptist Church of Wolf Point for 15 years. He was a faithful servant for prayer, music, and whatever else he could do to help. People who met Robert were overwhelmed by his generosity and his peaceful heart. Robert truly loved the Lord and would gladly give his last five dollar bill to anyone who asked. He was humorous and sincere and quite the visitor. Robert was a nurturing father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and most recently had spoken with pride about all his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter, Ceceilia and Greg Solberg and their children, Malia (Ty), Cassandra (Dusan), Elizabeth (Gerald), Alexander (Tiffany), and Aubreigh (Jeff); son, Lee and Sharri Vandall and their children, Daniel, Brittney (George), Hannah, and Ireland; daughter, Loretta and Jeff Wozwiak and their children, Grabrielle, Savannah, and Victoria; sister, Janis Collins of Wolf Point, MT; brother, Michael Smith of Colorado; and 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, all whom he loved and had a special place in his heart for, especially the little ones.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria Louise; parents, Charles and Emma Smith; brothers, Charles Smith, Leonard Smith (Lucille and Jane), and Frank Smith; sisters, Maizie Smith, Rosemary (Jim) Lamb, Lilian (Gene) Hertz, and Pearl MacDonald; nephews, Richard Smith and Horace Pipe; three great nephews, Robert MacDonald, Leo Saddleback, and Jeremiah Pipe; and one great niece, Samantha Kirn.
A wake will be held 7 p.m. Friday, August 15 at the Community Hall in Wolf Point. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, August 16 at the Community Hall in Wolf Point. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Wolf Point. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel of Wolf Point has been entrusted with the arrangements.
