Lonny C. “Buddy” Thornton, age 82 of Poplar, Montana passed away September 29, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Williston, North Dakota. Buddy was born in Forth Worth, Texas to Otis and Nell (Urserry) Thornton on August 9, 1928. Buddy grew up and received his education in the Fort Worth area.
Buddy served his country during World War II, entering the Army on August 30, 1946 in Big Spring, Texas. While in the Army he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, and the Japanese Occupation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on July 21, 1949.
Buddy married Mary Anne Dolezilek on August 25, 1953, in Poplar, Montana. They enjoyed 57 years together.
During his working career Buddy served as the Street Supervisor for the City of Poplar Water Department. He also was as a volunteer ambulance driver and EMT for the Poplar Hospital, as well as a volunteer fireman for the city of Poplar for 21 years.
Buddy was a wonderful man, a great husband, father and grandfather. He loved art, museums, and studied American history. Buddy will be greatly missed by his family and his many dear friends.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Nell Thornton, and his daughter Julie Thornton.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Thornton, of Poplar; his daughters, Nell Marie Thornton Liao, of Riverside, CA, Nancy Thornton of Ypsilanti, MI and Bonnie Thornton Liebel, of San Antonio, TX; his son, Peter Thornton of Falls Church, VA; his grandchildren, Hana Thornton of St. Joseph, MO, Adam Liebel of San Antonio, TX, Heidi Liebel of San Antonio, TX, Andrew Liao of Riverside, CA, Michelle Liao of Riverside, CA and Leo Thornton of Ypsilanti, MI.
His Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 4 at Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Poplar City Cemetery.
