Winifred (“Winnie”) V. Red Eagle Smith, age 83, died peacefully in her home with her family on Thursday, April 17, 2008, following a courageous battle with congestive heart failure.
She was born July 25, 1924, in Brockton, Montana, on the Fort Peck Sioux Reservation to the late Reverend Lloyd and Jennie Red Eagle.
Winifred is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Jack Tootoosis; first cousin Philip Red Eagle, Sr., sons, Michael, Quentin, Woodrow, Gerald, Martin, and Jan (son-in-law); daughters, Faye, Nancy, and Cindy (daughter-in-law); grandchildren, Eric, Mytia Rose, Lisa, Marlon, Gail, Tessa, Rita, Courage, Sarah, Olivia, Douglas II, and Maurice; and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, numerous relatives and many friends. Preceding Winifred were brothers Oliver Red Eagle and Milton Red Eagle; husband Lawrence M. Smith; and daughter Jennifer Smith Kingswan.
